In case you're not following all the news on theonering.net, here's the response from Ian McKellen regarding Peter Jackson's letter regarding New Line Picture's heads-up-their-asses decision...

I'm not convinced it's a heads-up-their-asses decision. Sounds more like a cover-our-butts decision, what with all that talk about how there are lawsuits left to be resolved and stuff. The True Fans of the stories probably won't see it quite that way, but I'm sure there are directors besides Jackson who can do justice to the story.
